There is something special about this home industry which we visited for our field trip on March 28th, 2013.
At first glance, if we take a look around the workshop and it’s workers, it seems normal. But once we pay attention on how they communicate to each other, then we can see that they do not talk, but use sign language.
Yes, all of the workers are deaf!
In Indonesia, it can be hard for people with disability to find employers who are willing to give them a chance although they really want to work. Miss Ratnawati Sutedjo is one of those rare employers, she especially open this workshop and hires deaf people to be her workers here. They’ve been trained so they have skills that can be put into good use, making home decorations, souvenirs, education materials, fabrics, dress, and many other creative and beautiful things to sell. But the most wonderful thing is they have self confidence and the feeling that they are precious. We can see how they work diligently and happily.
We also got a chance to learn some basic sign-language and sing a song. It’s really COOL !!
